re congenital valvular aortic stenosis...where does the prognosis of 60% will die before age 40 come from? My son was born with a bicuspid valve and severe aortic stenosis..he has had 2 caths and is now mild..he is 6 years old. I have never been told of such a bleak prognosis though I have asked about figures and I was told he is expected to live to be an "old man"..We go to SickKids in Toronto and there care is outstanding. Does this figure co-relate to different countries..I see you are from India.
Thanks

Dr. Thejus,

Your site is the first I've been able to find that remotely relates to my grandson's condition. We are desperate to find help from someone that can help us better understand and ultimately help my grandson.

He is 22 months old; diagnosed at birth with
- TOF with APV (with obstructive airway
     issues)
- Dextrocardia
- 22q13.3 deletion syndrome

He's had 2 open-heart surgeries with more to follow (to replace pulmonary valve)
- 1st surgery was to put in a pulmonary
valve and repair a hole in his heart that
went from one chamber to the other. They
    did something to relieve airway
obstruction. He was aspirating to they put
    in a G-J tube to increase feeds/administer
    meds.
- 2nd surgery was to replace pulmonary
valve (was leaking); repair (2nd time)
    abnormal branching pulmonary artery
    compressing bronchi.

Docs are trying but we can tell they've not come across a case like him before. They call him a "textbookcase". He now vomits all the time. We give hima diretic to reduce water retention which causes his potassium levels to flucuate which in turn requires him to then be given potassium.

Poor baby has been through a lot. We search in hope to find a fix; at a minimum, improve his quality of life. At the very least, we'd like to better understand the combined anomolies in hopes to serve as a better advocate for him.

I agree fully with Dr. Jaffer Basheer. Your site is really excellent and needs more attention from medical professionals.

Let us hope that Dr. Jaffer will start his pulmonology site soon and link up with Heart Pearls!
